Many lives many masters

Book written by a psychiatrist Dr. Brian Weiss its all about his experience with a patient who comes  with panic attacks and phobia and who donot respond to conventional treatment for her panic anxiety attacks.

He tries hypnosis a therapy to help her, finds the different layers of mind unfolding. The patient narrates the different life experience born at different time the past life traumas which has the key to her problems in this life.
The patients narrate the messages from spaces between the lives.
The mysteries of mind and its abilities and its dimensions are illustrated in this book.
The author tries to put things in scientific perspective with his critical analysis.  Simultaneously was in surprise that certain thing which cannot be brought in to scientific arena .

The message from the masters.
The author says “wisdom is achieved very slowly; this is because intellectual knowledge, easily acquired, must be transformed in to “emotional” or subconscious, knowledge. Once transformed, the imprints are permanent. Behavioral practice is the necessary catalyst of this reaction. Without action the concept will wither and fade. Theoretical knowledge without practical application is not enough.
Balance and harmony are neglected today, yet they are the foundation of wisdom. Everything is done in excess. But nature has balance ecological systems are not eliminated, plants are consumed and then grown. The source of sustenance are dipped into and then replenished. The flower is enjoyed, the fruit is eaten, the roots are preserved.
Humankind has not learned about the balance. Human kind is guided by greed and ambition, steered by fear. In this way it eventually destroys itself. But nature will survive.
Happiness is really rooted in simplicity. The tendency to excessiveness in thought and action diminishes happiness.
If a part of humankind is eternal, and there is much evidence and history to think so, then why are we doing such bad things to ourselves? “Consider the lessons. Intellectually the answers have always been there, but this need to actualize by experience, to make the subconscious imprints permanent by “emotionalizing” and practice the concept, is the key. Lip service without the behavior has no value, it is easy to read about or to talk about love and charity and faith. But to do it, to feel it, almost requires an altered state of consciousness.  The permanent state is reached by knowledge and understanding. It is sustained by physical behavior, by act and deed, by practice.
Its an experience which changes the doctor and his views on life, a nice book to read and the author has narrated it well and trying to explain it in the boundaries of science. When it goes beyond the science he leaves the choice to us.
I am not here to say to believe in past life therapy which are now popular on some of the regional media, I do not believe it personally. What I liked about the book is the narration by the author which makes us to think differently. Secondly the message what author receives from the patient during the therapy…

My Bird Encounters - “Purple Moorhen”.

As a part of bird watching,  I would like to know more about the bird which I come across.
Today I have chosen “Purple Moorhen”.
It so happened that we were able to sight this bird when we had been to hebbal lake for birding and photography.

·      This bird is also called swamp hens.  And in kannada (ನೇರಳೆ ಜಂಬುಕೋಳಿ)

·         As the name indicates, the bird is more or less the size of a village hen. It is purple-blue in colour with long red legs and toes. The bill is also red and the head is bald. The female are less attractive with pruplish grey in colour.

·         There are about 13 species and sub-species of swamphen, differentiated on the basis of their plumage (it is feathers covering the bird with their patterns and arrangement)

·         The Purple Swamphen prefers wet areas with high rainfall, swamps, lake edges and damp pastures. The birds often live in pairs and larger communities. It clambers through the reeds, eating the tender shoots and vegetable-like matter, insects, water beetles. They have been known to eat eggs, ducklings, small fish and invertebrates such as snails.

Kindly add on information and make it more informative.

The Shikra- the hunter

Female Shikra

It was Monday morning and accidentally my wife saw a bird which flew to the ground, caught hold of a squirrel and flew up on a jambu tree in front of my house.  We like or say love bird watching. We started watching the activities of the bird. It very silently but majestically caught hold of its prey, waited patiently and enjoyed the food.
It made itself comfortable, safe, almost hiding in the greens of the tree.  It took nearly 2 hrs to finish his meal. Then with krik…. Krick sound it made and flew away.  Being amature in photography we were able capture a few.. on our camera.
We did know  which bird it was. We thought it could be a kite or eagle. With the help of birding friends we came to know that it is a“shikra”
Few things learnt by group about the bird:
This is one among the Bird of prey. The ‘bird of prey’ is known to be birds which have good vision to find prey and strong feet for holding and strong curved beak for tearing the flesh.
They are also called as “Raptors” the word derived from latin rapere (meaning to seize or take by force).
The examples for bird of prey or generally called Raptors are Eagles, kites, Vultures, Falcons, owels ect…

The Shikra (Accipiter badius) is a small bird of prey  widely distributed in Asia and Africa where it is also called the Little Banded Goshawk.
The Shikra is found in a range of habitats including forests, farmland and urban areas. They are usually seen singly or in pairs. The flight is typical with flaps and glides. Their flight usually draws alarms among smaller birds and squirrels. They feed on rodents, squirrels, small birds, small reptiles mainly lizards but sometimes small snakes  and insects.

The rest which I really not wanted….

On the 5th January (Thursday)  I was as usual riding on my motorbike towards my clinic. It was a road sloping downward, there was BBMP work  going on and there was sand spread all over the road. I am sure that I was slowing down  when I saw a speedbreaker I  pressed on my breaks ….
Zoo…m on the ground was me and my bike . I had fallen on the road with outstretched hand  and was not able get up on my own. People around  rushed and lifted me. I realised that I was not able to move my right arm. I was in great pain, sweating with nausea. I thought  it could be a shoulder dislocation.
“ a man from the house opposite rushed towards me and gave a chair for me to sit and water to drink.  He called a guy who was on the first floor, he came saw me and introduced himself as a duty doctor in a nursing home and offered help. I told him that I need sling for my arm. He brought a cloth from his house and helped me tie the arm sling.  I walked to a near by diagnostic center to have a x-ray  done. The diagnostic centre was well known to me and they  helped me and also called a visiting orthopedicist.
Worst was not over….
The x-ray was showing  3 pieces of my upper arm bone. And he suggested immediate surgery.  The words used by the attending doctor was “Unlucky to have this……” as he explained the pros and cons of surgery.
It took time to accept the reality and started mentally preparing for it.
I asked the ortho doctor  can i swim, do photographing….  J all my passions.
He told that if I do the exercises then the rehabilitation would be better or I may landup with a frozen shoulder (stiffness of shoulder).
I took an auto came stright to a hospital near my house, wanting to show to a doctor known to me personally. It was lucky to get him immediately at an unexpected time and we had a consultation.
What is the problem?
Medical terminology says  “ three part fracture of proximal humerus”  means that upper arm shoulder bone is broken  in to three pieces at the upper end.
The broken pieces were not displaced and that was important .
The doctor gave option of conservative treatment as the pieces were in place. I was to give arm rest for a week and get a follow up  x-ray a week later to assess the position of the bone pieces. If the disposition is more than 1 cms or particular angle than I may need surgery other wise not. I need to go for a review  on 12th then I will know if I am lucky … or unlucky.
I feel and belive that I am always lucky…..
·         Fell in front of a house  where a doctor was residing and got sling for the arm support  which is very very important for this condition.
·         Initial medical assessment  was done in  very near and known place and got orthopedicist on time.
·         Again at home got doctor immediately.  More than that I got a better option.
·         My fracture is intact and not displaced  and no blood vessel or nerve injury.
·         I have a stronge support at home and well wishes of my patients  who call me up.
Now resting at home browzing,  reading …. Now trying to blog with left hand training my right Brain
But realy I needed a rest but not this kind.
12.01.2012
To day went for the follow up and took an repeat X-ray to see the fracture is in position. Lucky….
Things are fine and surgery ruled out. Now the rehabilitation exericies has to be started.
